Jon Carapiet


Jon was born in Ghana and is of Anglo-Armenian heritage. He was raised in England  and in 1992 moved to Aotearoa New Zealand where he studied for his M.Phil in photography at Elam School of Fine Arts. 

His work often uses images of the human face or captured from mass media, in an attempt to reconnect the viewer to an emotional response tied to humanitarian and global themes.

Jon’s photo-installations and exhibitions reflect on identity, cognitive disability and the impact of technologies on our ways of being.

As well as publications, exhibitions, installations and performance, Jon’s practice extends into community activism and draws on his professional expertise in branding and market research.

Jon curated PureNZ.net as part of the 2026 Auckland Festival of Photography.
